What Brings Customers Back to Troha's Chicken & Shrimp House Again and Again

When you've been in business since 1917, you hear a lot of stories.
Some customers tell us they haven't been here in 20, 30, or even 50 years. Others walk through the door for the first time after driving past
building hundreds of times. Some discover us through delivery, while others remember coming here with their parents or grandparents decades ago.
One thing they all have in common is that they made the decision to seek us out.
Recently, a customer told us he passed several seafood restaurants on his way to Troha's. After seeing one of our videos online, he decided it was finally time to see what all the talk was about. He ordered a pound of shrimp and later told us he "demolished the whole thing."
We've heard similar stories from customers in Cicero, Berwyn, Oak Park, La Grange, and neighborhoods across Chicago. Some are looking for a place they remember from years ago. Others are searching for something they feel is becoming harder to find: a family-owned restaurant that still prepares food the same way it always has.
Many customers also tell us they first heard about Troha's from a friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor. Others discover us through social media and decide to give us a try after seeing photos, videos, or customer comments. Long before online reviews existed, word of mouth helped build our business, and more than a century later, it remains one of the greatest compliments we can receive.
At Troha's, we still bread our shrimp by hand and cook every order fresh. We still make our coleslaw using a recipe that dates back to the early years of the business. We still serve the macaroni salad, crab salad, catfish, fish chips, and fried shrimp that generations of Chicago families have enjoyed.
What surprises us most is how often first-time customers become repeat customers.
Many people discover us through delivery. They place an order because they are looking for shrimp, catfish, or a family meal. A few days later, we see another order. Then another. Before long, they stop in and introduce themselves.
Others walk into the dining room and tell us they have been meaning to try Troha's for years. Sometimes they live only a few blocks away. Sometimes they have driven across the city.
The food business has changed dramatically since 1917. Restaurants come and go. Neighborhoods change. Technology changes. The way people order food changes.
What has never changed is the importance of earning a customer's trust one order at a time.
We are grateful to every customer who makes the trip, whether it is from around the corner or across the Chicago area. Every first visit creates the possibility of a new tradition, and every returning customer reminds us why four generations of the Troha family have continued serving Chicago for more than a century.
